Mephibosheth’s story is a powerful picture of grace. He was known as “lame in both feet,” living in Lo-Debar—a place of barrenness and isolation. His name even carried the meaning of shame.
Yet King David sought him out—not to punish him, but to restore him.
Because of a covenant made before Mephibosheth was born, he was invited to the king’s table and treated like one of the king’s sons, because of relationship. Though his feet were still lame, when he sat at the King’s table, his weakness was covered.
This is a picture of what Jesus does for us. Our weaknesses do not disqualify us from His presence. We may still have scars but Grace covers them.
You’re not defined by where you came from or what happened to you. You’re defined by the table you’ve been invited to!
Reflection Questions:
Do you relate to Mephibosheth’s fear or sense of unworthiness?
What does it mean to you that God invites you to His table?
Are there areas of your life where you still feel like you’re living in “Lo-Debar”?
